COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KOAA) – A cemetery in Colorado said a headstone for two brothers needs to go.
The headstone contains images of the middle finger.
Sisters Heidi and Holly Geschke and their families recently removed black tape from a headstone for two brothers. The tape was placed there because the headstone contains images that were deemed “inappropriate.”
The monument has been at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs for five years.
“To have a family come in after so many years and tell them that we have to redo this over again, nobody wants to do it in the first place,” Heidi Geschke said.
On the headstone are images of the middle finger.
The cemetery manager said the headstone now has to be removed.
The rules state a headstone cannot be profane or offensive to the general public.
“That’s really irrelevant because once I was made aware of it, then I had to do something,” cemetery manager Cheryl Godbout said when asked how many people complained about the headstone. “It would not have been right of me to know about it, knowing it violates our rules and to ignore our rules.”
But Heidi and Holly Geschke said they think the images are OK.
“This was created with so much love and respect and loyalty to our brothers,” Holly Geschke said. “This is speaking to the character of not who they were, but who we are as a family.”
The cemetery manager said the family doesn’t have to be responsible for removing the headstone. The cemetery will remove it and store it for the family.
The family said they’re not planning to remove or redo the headstone.
