Kate Hudson’s beloved “patchwork family” wouldn’t be complete without three important members: her mom Goldie Hawn, her dad Bill Hudson, and her stepdad Kurt Russell. The latter actor raised the Almost Famous star from a young age; after she was born in 1979, Hudson’s parents split in 1980.
“He’s an original,” the actress once said of Russell, whom she affectionately calls “Pa.” “One of kind. A powerful, intelligent, talented, loyal family man. He has taught me that we can all exist with immense love through our differences.”

Aside from her parents, Hudson also has several siblings. Her older brother Oliver Hudson is the son of Goldie and Bill; her half-brother Wyatt Russell is the son of Goldie and Kurt. Then there’s Boston Russell, who is the son of Kurt and his ex-wife Season Hubley, and finally Emily and Zachary Hudson, who are the children of Bill’s marriage to Cindy Williams. Goldie and Kurt also share eight grandkids.
“As parents, we have a tremendous responsibility,” Hawn once told People. “As a parent, you basically raise your children to raise their children appropriately as well. So that’s that domino effect.”

Though Hawn split from Hudson’s biological dad when she was one, the Overboard star didn’t reconnect with Russell until 1983. Hudson was four at the time. In 1986, Kate and Oliver gained a brother when Hawn and Russell welcomed their first child together, a son named Wyatt.
Hudson hasn’t been shy about celebrating her stepdad, especially on Instagram. For his 70th birthday, the Song Sung Blue actress penned a heartfelt tribute to her “Pa.”
“A note for all dads of girls,” Hudson wrote in part. “He gave me the gift of confidence instilling a knowingness in me that I deserved everything I worked for and I knew that he’d always have my back in whatever challenges may lay ahead. When you have a dad who gives you permission to be confident you live courageously. And that’s my insta love letter to my dad who has lived 70 years today.”
The longtime couple have been together for over 40 years.

After meeting back in 1966 and coupling up in 1983, Hawn and Russell have now been together for more than four decades. The actress once reflected on their meet-cute on the set of The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in an interview with BBC Radio 4, per People.
“I was 21 and he was 16 and I thought he was adorable but he was much too young,” Hawn recalled. “And then years later we met up again and I liked him and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. But we both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell.”
Hawn also told People that she really fell for Russell after watching him interact with Kate and Oliver. “What really got me was when I watched my kids when they’d come to the set and how he was with them,” she said. “He was amazing with them. He was such a natural.”

Both Hawn and Russell had children from previous relationships when they got together in 1983. Hawn, of course, had Oliver and Kate; Russell had Boston from his marriage to Hardcore actress Season Hubley. As mentioned, Hawn and Russell share a son named Wyatt. Kate and Oliver, meanwhile, also have two half-siblings named Emily and Zachary from Bill’s marriage to Cindy Williams.
Nowadays, Hawn and Russell also play the role of grandma and grandpa to eight grandchildren. Kate welcomed her kids Ryder, Bingham, and Rani in 2004, 2011, and 2018, respectively. The Glass Onion actress was 24 when she first became a mom.
“I want [children] early enough to really experience my parents young,” Kate previously told People. “I want my parents to be able to see my kids graduate from high school.”

Though Kate was raised by Russell and frequently refers to him as her “Pa,” her biological dad is actually Bill Hudson, a musician best known for his family band the Hudson Brothers. Kate “[doesn’t]
really have” a relationship with him, per People. The publication added that Bill “wasn’t present” after his and Hawn’s divorce was finalized in 1982.
“There’s nothing new there but love,” Kate told the publication. “I love him. . . . I just don’t overthink it. It’s a 40-year-old issue.”
The Glorious singer also told Howard Stern that she had done “so much work” to repair her relationship with Bill, but that a post by her brother Oliver celebrating “Happy abandonment day” on Father’s Day in 2015 actually prompted Bill to “disown” them both.
“I know [Bill] well enough to know, throughout the years, that whatever it is that he carries, whatever it is that makes him unable to have the capacity to be our dad doesn’t mean that he hasn’t loved us from afar or tried his best,” she added. “I wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t for my dad.”
She admires Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s relationship.

Perhaps it goes without saying that Hawn and Russell’s decades-long love story is a rarity in Hollywood. In the same 2024 interview with People, Hudson explained that their “strongest value” is their dedication to their family “unit.”
“They’ve been through everything together, and it’s such an amazing thing to see, especially as they get older, how beautiful their relationship is. It’s so loving and caring,” she added. “They’ve stuck with it. It’s like a very rare Hollywood story. They’re in it forever. It’s wild.”
