A Rescue Dog’s Relief: Bernie’s Journey at Bondi Vet

WATCH BERNIES’S JOURNEY VIDEO AT THE END :

Introduction

Bernie is a lovable rescue dog originally adopted from a shelter in California [00:41]. He now enjoys an active, fun-filled life with his dedicated dog nanny, Dmitri, and his “wolf pack” of furry friends. However, a sudden and painful neck wound recently put a pause on Bernie’s playtime.

The Suspected Bite

Dmitri noticed a nasty, pus-filled lump on Bernie’s neck. Because Bernie frequently engages in rough play with his best dog-friend Victor, Dmitri initially suspected that the wound was an infected bite mark from their wrestling sessions [02:43]. Worried about Bernie’s obvious distress, Dmitri quickly took him to see Dr. Kate at the Bondi Vet clinic.

The Real Diagnosis

To get a clear look at the problem, Dr. Kate and veterinary nurse Fran carefully clipped away Bernie’s thick fur around the inflamed area. Much to their relief, Dr. Kate confirmed that there were no bite marks [02:55].

Instead, she diagnosed Bernie with post-traumatic dermatitis, commonly known as a “hot spot” [03:08]. Because Bernie loves the beach, moisture had become trapped underneath his collar after swimming. The wet collar constantly rubbed against his skin, causing a severe and painful bacterial infection.

Treatment Plan

To treat the hot spot and prevent the infection from entering Bernie’s bloodstream, Dr. Kate prescribed a strict regimen:

An initial antibiotic injection to kickstart the healing process [04:11].

Oral antibiotic pills and a topical cream to be applied twice a day [04:50].

Strict orders for no collar and absolutely no swimming for a full week so the infected skin could dry out and heal [03:32].

A Happy Recovery
