Meet Hazel, a sweet Pit Bull whose life changed in the most incredible way.
Back in May 2020, Hazel was rescued after being abandoned by her previous owners. She arrived at a rescue organization in heartbreaking condition—frail, severely underweight, and battling diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication of diabetes. At around eight or nine years old, she had already endured years of hardship.
Hazel had spent most of her life blind because of juvenile diabetes. She had also been used repeatedly for breeding, surviving a life filled with neglect and suffering. Despite everything she had been through, Hazel never lost her gentle spirit.
The rescue team was determined to give her the future she deserved. Soon, compassionate foster parents Elli and Sam welcomed Hazel into their home. Knowing she couldn’t see, they carefully adapted their house to keep her safe, using voice commands, sound cues, and a hazard-free environment to help her confidently navigate her surroundings.
Day by day, Hazel began to blossom. She grew stronger, became more playful, and slowly learned to trust the world around her.
A few months later, Hazel moved to another foster home with Allison and Pete. During this time, an extraordinary opportunity arose—Hazel was scheduled to undergo surgery that could restore her vision.
In October 2020, she underwent successful cataract surgery with artificial lens implants in both eyes. After recovering for several days, Hazel reunited with her foster parents. For the very first time in her life, she was able to actually see the people who had loved and cared for her.
It was an unforgettable, emotional moment.
Her recovery required weeks of careful treatment, including multiple daily eye drops, but Hazel handled it all with patience—and plenty of tasty treats as rewards.
Not long afterward, Hazel’s journey reached its happiest chapter. She was adopted by a loving family in Massachusetts, where she found the forever home she had always deserved. Alongside her new family and canine brother, Cooper, Hazel finally experienced a life filled with love, comfort, and happiness.
