A 17-year-old girl has been arrested following a disturbing incident that left three horses injured by a sharp object during a major barrel racing event just outside the Las Vegas Strip.
The Incident and Investigation
Early in the morning on Saturday, May 30, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of an injured horse at South Point’s massive equestrian facility. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered that the situation was far more severe than initially reported:
- Three horses had sustained stab wounds from a sharp object.
- Detectives from the department’s animal cruelty division quickly focused on a 17-year-old female suspect who had authorized access to the barn area.
- The suspect was revealed to be an active competitor in the event.
The teenage girl now faces severe legal consequences, including 12 counts of willful/malicious killing, maiming, or torturing of an animal, alongside three felony counts of malicious destruction of private property exceeding $5,000.

Fortunately, the injured equine athletes received immediate medical attention. While their injuries are not considered life-threatening and they are expected to make a full recovery, the trauma and physical damage mean they will be sidelined from competition for the foreseeable future.
